Poets such as Xie Ling-Yun and Tao Yuan-Ming often describe the peace of mountain life as blissful. The poet Wang Wei wrote that "The grass in spring remained green as autumn arrived. Hiding in the pine tree shade we escaped from the summer heat. Flocks of cows and sheep returning to the village, children grown in the countryside see no dignitary." This poem illustrates the coming of autumn with a scene of cows and sheep roaming among pine trees and spring grass.
This sculpture carved in high-relief captures this scenery in the mountains. On the front there are farmers about to return home and a fisherman at ease, musing about life as a hermit. On the back are finely carved cows and a young shepherd. Mountain life seemingly emerges from this sculpture, enchanting viewers.
